The Beatmobile Part 3

More folktronica from the early 00s in the car again, this time a classic from Four Tet's Rounds album. I think one of my biggest regrets was not buying the cdr promo of the withdrawn version of this album with the Tori Amos samples still in which were removed from the final version of Unspoken when I saw it at the time.

Anyway, it's still a classic and I particularly like this track as when I saw him live (well I say live, playing with his laptop should I say), he made such a weird and wonderful noise, my mate walked out because he thought either he was warming up too long or those noises weren't a proper song.

The Beatmobile Part 2

The Caribou lp "Swim" is already one of my albums of the year so it was time to re-appraise his first two releases back when he was still allowed to be called Manitoba

I had forgotten just how good they are. Although I still listen to a lot of Four Tet's folktronica stuff from the same time, I seem to have skipped over these cds in the last year in favour of newer stuff but actually listening to them again now, all the wonky, glitchy beats stuff is probably more relevant now than it was in 2001 and 2003.

I think of the two albums, "Start Breaking My Heart" and "Up In Flames", it was the latter that sounded better on the car stereo that these judgements are being made (and should therefore be taken with a pinch of salt).

I only bought these albums on the strength of great reviews / album of the month awards in Jockey Slut. Maybe it is time to dig out the back issues and check some more stuff from the early '00s, seems like it was quite the bleak place for music I had somehow convinced myself it was.

The Beatmobile Part 1

For a couple of weeks now I have been thinking of doing a daily post on what I have been listening to in the car as for about a month or so I am having to do a lot of driving around and this has given me time to pull out a few cds that I might not have played so much recently. Anyway, busyness soon stopped that idea but as I now have a couple of days off to recover, I thought I would retrospectively catch up. I am actually starting with what I had in today but the order will now all be muddled up but it makes now difference.

Anyway, today was a Friday classic (oh yeah, I forgot to mention; on Mondays I like something quiet, calm and soothing building up to rave scenes on Fridays) from J Dilla Donuts. I think of all the cds I've had in the car over the past two weeks, this is probably the one I had most played recently and as the journey was pretty smooth this morning, I arrived at school in a very good mood.

As the tracks are so short, I thought I'd stick two of the ones that had me bopping down the motorway:
Two Can Win and
The Twister (Huh, What)

Blackclassical on SIR - Heavier than stone

I know you all already do but just in case there's someone at the back who hasn't been paying attention, you really should check out blackclassical's mixes on Spaceinvader. As I was listening back to last Sunday's show, I though I heard Mark Pritchard's Heavy As Stone - one of my favourites of the year so far. Of course, being the diggers' digger, it was obviously the original sample. Listen to both now and compare / contrast.

8bitch on Slit Jockey via Bleep OUT NOW!

I've been waiting since Adam and the dinosaurs were around to finally say that at last I have a copy of an 8bitch record in my hands. And although that wait continues a little while longer, the digi(-dub) generation will already be 3 steps ahead of me and will have this blasting out of their tinny speakers at the back of smoke filled night bus.

Yes, at last, someone opened their ears and realised the gathering masses chanting her name from the Reeperbahn to Spandau in a westerly direction (only Hannover is left until World domination) were right and released the debut single from one of my heroes of 2009.

I don't need to tell you anything about the high standard of the track, other than it builds on those demos I feel in love with last year - plus it now comes with a bonus Rustie remix.

Daniel Wang

Just been chatting tonight about Daniel Wang so I thought it was about time I put up a classic track.

I first heard the name around 2001 when he released 'Idealism' on Morgan Geist's Environ records and was featured in Jockey Slut. To me at least, he then kind of disappeared again, just sort of hearing about his dj sets for a few years until about 2 years ago when that nu-baleric stuff was around and people mentioned these modern tracks sounding like classic Italo disco and the Balihu label was thrown in.

This track originally out in '93, was picked up again on the James Murphy Fabric mix in '07 and was a Unabombers Electric Chair classic, featured on their RIP ep in '08.

Burial / Four Tet

Just realised I hadn't put up a track with this weeks Songs Of Praise post so here is a re-up for my track of '09 that was also a popular choice on Sunday - Burial and Four Tet's Moth.

I stuck it in the show after Toby (Thunderloops / Svetlana Records) had played it on one of his recent mixes and now as a fully paid up member of the Space Invader team, I thought I'd play that one for him. Check his shows every other Wednesday 18:30 - 20:00

Download:
BTW: As I knew at the time that this record was a bit special and pretty limited, I bought two copies when it came out - I would be willing to sell / swap one for a fair price.
