The best of the Cubikmusik reggae selection

As a little follow up and thank you to everyone who listened and loved the Gregory Isaacs mix, and to tie in with my first anniversary on Space Invader Radio next week, I thought I'd do another little reggae mix.
All of these tracks have featured in the Cubikmusik Reggae Selection of Songs Of Praise (Sundays 6-8pm (GMT)) at some point over the year, most originating from Cubik's blog or played because he loves them.
Thanks again to everyone who has been checking my stuff this week - it is really appreciated.

Arthur Russell and The Flying Hearts featuring Allen Ginsberg

I picked up this new (well old) limited release from Arthur Russell on a recommendation from Mr Beatnick and thought I'd rip it to use in a show but thought also more people should hear it and seeing as how I only saw one place selling it online (here), I'm guessing a lot of people might have missed it.

Ramblings

Just a few little observations on my first (and no doubt last) popular mix on mixcloud which has kind of rocketed away this evening - I think entirely down to the fact people saw the name Gregory Isaacs, only knew the track from the Night Nurse adverts and wanted to hear more now he has died. As mine is the only mix up, everyone was forced to listen to me.

Now this got me thinking (these aren't in any order - just ramblings off the top of my head):
1. It proves talent plays no role in popularity - That mix was probably the most thrown together thing I've done, whereas things which have taken hours of digging, ripping, mixing and editing usually get 3 listens.
2. It doesn't take any promotion on my part to have a hit - Apart from the auto tweet that is first generated, I didn't put the link up again ever as I generally don't.
3. Clearly no-one reads this blog - As soon as the mixcloud counter hit 100 listens I put the mix available to listen and download on official.fm with the link back here. In the same time that mixcloud reached another 250 listens, the offical.fm link had 4 listens and 3 downloads
4. The only person who left any comment in any of the places where the mix was upped, was the very first listener on mixcloud who I'm guessing probably was quite a big fan of Gregory Isaacs in the first place.

I have no problem that no-one listens or reads my stuff usually - I don't think its particularly interesting or insightful or anywhere near as good as what a billion other people do a lot better but I just really hope that maybe just a couple of the 400+ and counting also listen to maybe the Rhythm & Sound mix - well if they like reggae, its not impossible, and maybe just maybe actually go and buy a Basic Channel record or something. I think my dream is one day someone says 'I heard this because of you and so I went out and bought it'. It hasn't happened yet.

RIP Gregory Isaacs

RIP Ari Up

Sad news this morning that The Slits Ari Up has died aged just 48.

For much better words than I could do, these tributes from Joe Muggs and Everett True are must reads.

Some new(ish) bits and bobs

I thought I'd try something a bit different, it might turn into a regular idea. Or not. Anyway, I noticed the fairtilizer had changed recently to official fm so I thought I'd have another go at using it. I thought to kick off I'd just stick up some of the records I ripped for the last show so no-one can complain that I'm giving away good quality copies (they are all a bit too loud and distorting) and they are only up as streaming so go and buy them yourselves!

RIP Solomon Burke

I've just seen on the news that one of the great soul singers was lost this morning; Solomon Burke at the age of 70.
I guess most people know him for Cry To Me from Dirty Dancing or Everybody Needs Somebody To Love from The Blues Brothers but here a few of the artists that took his track Get Out Of My Life Woman and flipped it for one of the ultimate breaks:

And the timeless

DJs in PJs Part 13

Unlucky 13 for some? ....don't really know what to finish that with - make your own punchlines! Anyway, looks like DJsInPjs has made it to no. 13 with Bryn Trust In Dust on duties this week. My choices this week were Carol Williams (did you spot the Onra sample?), the new(ish) Kanye (did you spot the Smokey sample?) and James Carr (who thank God I have never heard anyone try to sample, they would have to die)
