Helix is that dude with All Caps & Night Slugs 12″s out this apocalyptic 2012 which places him in unique position to quietly influence the best djs this year; just before the oceans evaporate forever… and so what’s he offering? Well he’s upping the tempo on all this pussy compressed laptop techno and trying to bring back something raw uncut with clattering, black-pepper drum programming that feels authentic. My hero of 2011 is Helix. Producer of track of the year, Stacks, which I have played almost constantly since the summer. The track, although still as yet unreleased, was picked up by many big named djs and was included in Ben UFO's recent Rinse cd. He is also part of the best new label of the year, Glasgow's All Caps, with a 100% hit success rate from their first releases.

I caught up with Helix earlier this week to chat about the record, the label, Ben UFO and where he is going next.

Pretty good. Building a lot of loops for my liveset

Really? What’s the plans with that?

Luckyme want me to do a mix for them so I'm just giving a lot of stuff its debut in the liveset for them. And then one day when somebody books me

Your earlier productions were more a Basic Channel / dub techno sound. Stacks is very different to them. Was that a conscious idea to try other styles or just how your style is developing or are you planning on doing more minimal / dubby techno again?Stacks was the product of another side of my production that I felt matured enough to the point of being able to make trax.

So would you say your techno tracks are still not where you feel comfortable with them yet? They sound ready now to me.

None of my trax are ever at a point where I'm entirely comfortable with them, especially not my loop-based projects.

My goal is to find the perfect loop.

How did Stacks come about then? Is it something you'd been working on for a while or just one of them moments were all the ideas came together quickly and just worked?

Lol! How did you manage to get an unreleased track onto Ben UFO's Rinse cd?

But seriously, Ben just happened to like it enough to include it on the mix.

It already got a bunch of publicity before Rinse 16.

And are all the hows, whys and whatnots about licensing pretty dull? So you actually see much money from compilations?

Can you tell me more

How did you get the track to Ben? Was it through connections or has he been a friend for some time now?

Bake knows Ben more than I do. Since Bake was releasing it, he just got it into Ben's hands somehow.

About a year ago I spoke to you about the scene around Georgia and you said that no one really cares about techno around there. Has there been any change this year or are you still having to travel to clubs?

No change. Still the only one making / playing trax I like. Although I'm slowly getting my friends into it through forcing them to hear my music all the time.

What scenes are big over there? I know its lowest common denominator stuff but hasn’t rave music broken through at all with mainstream r'n'b using so many (of the albeit crap ones) dance producers these days?

Well, we've got a bunch of "raves" thrown locally

But nothing worth bothering with?

Just house parties blasting the latest in either overly aggressive dubstep or beatport house. So nothing I ever deal with.

It seems really weird and a bit odd that everyone at that Hessle night at fabric earlier in the year has heard your track over a really good system about 5 times (or however many rewinds it ended up getting) whereas you can't.

Yeah, I've only heard it once on a club system, and I was the one playing it.

What was that night then? Are you getting bookings from a bit further afield now?

Nope, I was opening for Silkie in Atlanta. I figure bookings will come when my records finally come out.

Speaking of which - has there been a reason for the delayed release dates or was it just that ALLCAPS 001 was held back so its pushed your back too?

After the delays, we were looking at a December release, which we didn't really want to do. So it's most likely coming out in January.

You know, over here, they used to say you get weird chart hits in January as the post Christmas releases dry up...

Don't really have any preference as to when it comes out, I'm just happy for whenever it comes out.

Well you've kept me waiting about 6 months to get my hands on it so another 2 weeks isn’t going to hurt anyone.

Still working with ALLCAPS or are you in discussions with any other labels yet?

Well, I've got an EP coming on Other Heights, that Night Slugs thing, and I'm just casually chatting with a couple other label owners, throwing trax at them and just seeing where things go.

Any word of remix work yet or are you still just doing bootleg remixes at the moment?

Oneohtrix Point Never's Daniel Lopatin made the best album in the world since his last album. And then went and bettered it again a few weeks ago.
The two albums he was on this year, firstly with David Borden, James Ferraro, Sam Godin and Laurel Halo on Frkwys then in his own Oneohtrix Point Never guise, were masterpieces of modern experimental ambient.
His remix work this year included a nod to one of the underloved originators of the sound, Harald Grosskopf, whose original 1980 lost synth classic was reworked by todays contemporaries. It is however another of his rewordings which was my personal favourite remix of the year; that of Anthony and The Johnson's Swanlights.

Jamie XX may have been a bit ubiquitous this year. There must only be a few people on the planet he didn't offer his steel pans to. Gil Scott Heron, Radiohead twice, Falty DL, Adele, Rhianna and his own solo debut on Numbers. When working with the former legends, he produced some of the best work of his career and with the initially questionable moves of working with the latter mainstream artists, produced some of the best work of their careers. Add to that his increased dj schedule this year and rumours of working on new material with The XX and he has been a busy boy but it doesn't look like the start of 2012 is going to slow him down any.

Hype Williams fuzzy, lo fi, low res rips, twenty-first century synth pop and foggy 2 step sound rumbled through the whole year. Kicking off was the One Nation lp back in Spring. Summer was soundtracked by Rise Up and the Kelly Price ep and by autumn, Dean Blunt and Inga Copeland were putting out their first solo projects and mixing new label mates at Hyperdub, King Midas Sound.

If techno is futuristic funk, bleeping, buzzing, knocking, dripping and reverberating then Actress brought it all out of South London in every track he made this year. Deep and dubby as Rainy Dub, weird and wonderful as Gershwin. As epic the full 12 minute version of the Panda Bear remix, as delicate and nimble as many parts of the Parallel World tracks.

Label of the year for me has to have released only 100% hits. This year with two eps from label boss Semtek and the first release by Northern By Nature favourite Mr Beatnick in over a year, Don't Be Afraid are the deserving receprecants.

Not only were they producing some amazing material themselves, their choices of remixers; BNJMN, Architeq, Photonz and DJ 3000, plus they are great djs and deep diggers right across the board and just generally nice guys. Sickening isn't it?

Compliation of the year for me was Four Tet's Fabric mix released in September and it hasn't left the cd player much since. On paper it looks quite eclectic and unmixable yet it flows, not like a 70 minute going nowhere, rigid to the bpms blend, this was a collage of sounds. Far too many "where the fuck has he got that from?" moments, plus it included some brand new (and at that point) exclusive Four Tet tracks, both of which were of course amongst the many standout moments.

The hardest working man in showbiz this year must have been Caribou / Daphni Dan Snaith. Especially in the last few months, it seems like he has had a new record, edit or remix out every other week. Add to that the split record he made with Four Tet on Text earlier in the year plus the touring as a band and dj gigs all over the world, it is amazing how he finds the time and yet his standards have not slipped once all year.

Tri Angle was one of my favourite labels of the year, Wander / Wonder one of the best albums and yet it is for four remixes that Balam Acab is my hero this year. I don't know if the chillwave / synthwave / whatever they are calling it this week, will continue to be as big next year, but I'm for one will definitely be keeping tabs on where the likes of Tri Angle's Holy Other, How To Dress Well, oOoOO, Clams Casino, Ayshay and Balam Acab take it.

Although he died in 2000, it was only this year I discovered the work of the DJ Screw and the whole chopped and screwed sound. When one of my favourite record shops of the year, Second Layer, whose recommends can always be bought blind, made Rodger Stella's album 'Interior Moon' their album of the week, I had to find out more. The tags on the soundcloud clips included "DJ Screw" which has since lead me off another voyage of discovery but mainly it was this weird, slowed down, dubby, noise that had me hooked. A true headphone masterpiece.

The chopped and screwed, slug paced, dubby, syprupy, pitched down noise was then taken further with his double cassette 'remix' package. If you haven't heard it, you only need to know the words which had me hooked: King Tubby meets Cluster meets Steve Reich meets Terry Reilly. Go buy. Right now.

It's that time of year again and love them or loathe them, think they put the spotlight on missed and skipped gems, give a lazy cheats guide to discovering new music or just simply highlight the obvious anyway, I've whittled down a long list of 22 down to the Northern By Nature Heroes of 2011 Top 20.

First up is one of the few newcomers in the chart. Although I'd been aware of Koreless as a dj as member of Glasgow's ALL CAPS crew, it was his first productions and remixes that really blew me away this year.

In the year that James Blake disappeared somewhere off to some other planet called Radio 1 Live Lounge, it was left to Koreless to pick up the baton of young, exciting 2-step producers to push the sound on again.

I can't think off the top of my head of a better debut this year than '4D', on Pictures Music which was picked up by the likes of Jamie XX, Benji B and Gilles Peterson who not only had him remixing one of his artists on Brownswood Recordings, Ghostpoet, earlier in the year, he even went as far comparing him to some of the heavyweights of the scene after just that one record; "Remember when you first heard James Blake and Ramadanman? Well, remember this is where you first heard Koreless."

This week sees the release of a new ep on Svetlana Industries, something I am always excited and pleased to report and once again they do not disappoint.

Long before the current wave of Russian and Eastern European beats and glitch producers, Bulgarian duo 1000names were in at the foundation of the sound, debuting with the now classic Melonball Bounce alongside Rustie on Beatnick’s Vol 1 in 2007. Based in Sofia, Bulgaria, their geographic isolation and relatively long musical development has helped Margg and Nikko (their real names) develop a truly individualistic sound: quirky, bubbly, and human. They are identifiably part of the global beats scene without ever being generic.

They released their debut album with French label Eklektik Records, before moving over to Black Acre, dropping the first ever long player on that label. In January 2010 Mary Anne Hobbs invited them to contribute a mix for her legendary BBC Radio 1 show, and since then they’ve been featured and recommended in Pitchfork, XLR8R and every publication of note.

Svetlana Industries’ connection with Bulgarian duo 1000names goes back to maybe 2006, and they are one of the reasons we set the label up in the first place. So we’re delighted to finally drop their first full official release with us, and we can say that it’s been worth the wait. Following on from their acclaimed Illuminated Man album on Black Acre, Machine City is in our opinion easily their best work to date.

The five track EP is Svetlana’s format of choice: a concise but unified statement of where the artist is at a moment in time. 1000names have used to Machine City to showcase a new direction, retaining their signature touches - blissful synth melodies, abstract vocal samples - but moving away from the LA style beats sound towards a sound that Sonic Router described as a “slowed up house sound that’s firmly rooted in hip hop production”.

To us there’s a strong hint of Moroder and late 70s/early 80s new wave in there as well. This is the territory between disco, house, electropop, and hip hop, also being explored by artists like Dam Funk, Funkineven, and Om Unit - danceable but different.

Conceptually the record is a vision of the future. Equal parts Fritz Lang, Steve Jobs and Philip K Dick, it’s neither utopian or dystopian, it is simply machine - but a machine absolutely saturated with emotion. Propulsive, unstoppable, the humanity hidden in snatches of masked speech, occasional glitches in the sound. La Boheme is a miniature disco anthem. Zelda a cloud of Technicolor fog. Planet Video the delirious joy of the mechanised workplace. Machine City is the threat, surveillance, control. The very Teebs like First Postcard from Tokyo is a euphoric ascent through the clouds to a holiday destination in the sky.

Apologies to Toby and Andrea Svetalna for being so slow on this one - so slow in fact that it's really three pieces of news all in one now!

Firstly, after putting out two releases in one month in June 2011, with strong and widely praised records from emerging talents BNJMN and Nightwave, Svetlana repeats the formula with two five track EPs from the label’s Eastern European heartland: on 10 October the debut EP from Hungary’s Polyklinik, and at the end the of the month the long awaited Machine City EP from Bulgarians 1000names.

Budapest native Polyklinik is new to the public consciousness, but an old friend for the label, and he’s as enigmatic as his music, failing to turn up to photo shoots, amassing analogue synths and drum machines, and agreeing to meet only in public places. Over the last three years his music has changed: what began as a optimistic melodic dubstep sound has become denser, murkier, and gloopier. Influenced by the beats scene but far away from chopped up vocals and jazzy beats born in Californian sunshine, this is music from a country mired in financial crisis, Prime Ministerial lies and toxic red sludge.

&amp;amp;amp;lt;p&amp;amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;a href="http://shop.svetlanaindustries.com/album/svet006-the-ep"&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;SVET006: The + EP by Polyklinik&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/a&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;amp;lt;/p&amp;amp;amp;gt;

Bulgarian duo 1000names are also long time associates of Svetlana, but surprisingly this is their first proper release for label, after dropping an album and EP on the UK’s Black Acre, and an album on French label Eklektik. The EP is a vision of a future society, neither dystopian nor utopian, but somewhere in the middle, just like our own, and the sound is a timely slinky disco take on the contemporary beats sound. Lead track La Boheme has already attracted strong support.

And secondly, next Friday (4th November 2011) Svetlana are taking over the Rhythm Factory in Whitechapel to present their first ever London showcase in conjunction with Brighton’s hardcore underground house monsters Well Rounded Records, the label that launched Deadboy among others, and he’ll be headlining the night alongside BNJMN, Kelpe, Brey, Spatial and many more.

Also on the line-up is new Svetlana signing Microburst, whose live set was recently described as “a revelation” by one London reviewer.

Semtek Twitter History Lessons - Daphne Oram

Semtek has dropped another twitter history lesson this afternoon, this time on the early electronic pioneer, Daphne Oram.

My twitter history of Daphne Oram kicking off with some context to set the scene. The history of 'machine music' and 'electronic music' should not be confused, but the first feeds into the second.

As early as 1791 Wolfgang Von Kempelen was experimenting with a wind-powered synthesizer to help the deaf to talk.

Prior to 1950, though it was mainly the act of sound reproduction that concerned inventors.

Organettes which read note duration and pitch such as the Ariston were manufactured succesfully between 1880 and 1920.

While huge strides were occuring in sound reproduction between 1908 and 1930, thanks to the Edison Home Phonograph and the Grammophon in the area of sound synthesis it was only the Theremin that existed, invented accidentally in 1921 during a routine heterodyning test.

WW2 held back development in the 40's, but offered one crucial bi-product the first affordable home recording device

Crucially, the Webster Wire Recorder (1947) employed magnetism to record sound to a wire material, paving the way for tape.

Synthesis also advanced quickly after the war, with Maurice Martenot's 'Ondes' the first instrument to be adopted by composers like Messiaen

You can hear the influence of the Theremin in the sound of the OM, as Termen (its inventor) and Martenot had indeed met:

By 1947 Martenot was giving lessons in the Ondes, and it's at this point that developments in electronic music suddenly speed up.

The advent of tape and its commercial availability around 1949 paved the way for Schaeffer's Musique Concrete,

Musique Concrete was Schaeffer's search for what he called a 'concrete sound', made from 'real-world audibles' and naturally occuring sounds

Meanwhile in Darmstadt, Hermann Eimert was beginning to lecture on electronic music. This (1952) is very techno:

The Darmstadt lectures were attended by people like Stockhausen and Varese, and they lead to the establishment of the WDR Cologne Studios.

Schaeffer's work lead to the establishment of a Paris studio for electronic music, funded by the RTF. A

So where was the UK's counterpart? In Part 2 I'll look at how Oram's experiments lead to the establishment of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.

Oram attended Sherborne school where she studied music, and subsequently was accepted for the Royal College of Music. However, this was during ww2 and women were being conscripted into military service unless they occupied certain roles, eg nurse of teacher.

Oram became an electrotherapist at Kings College Hospital to avoid conscription, but soon tired of this and in 1943 she joined the BBC. For those who are wondering, women during ww2 built tanks, worked in rescue teams, and operated behind enemy lines.

Oram's first job for the BBC was 'Junior Programme Engineer', she was 18 at the time. She was responsible for sequencing playback of classical recordings, which required the seamless transition every 4 mins between 78rpm discs

That's correct, engineers had to literally beatmatch and mix the discs that made up the long symphonies to play them in full live.

As part of Oram's training at the BBC she was introduced to the Oscilloscope, which represents soundwaves visually:

When she later built the Oramics machine, she reversed the idea of an Oscilloscope, scanning instead a drawn wave and converting to sound.

Oram's first scores, written in the early '50s used in particular a machine at the BBC that allowed 78rpm records to be played backwards. Techniques of playing backwards, pitching down and pitching up were in the early 50's considered very avant garde, Schaeffer also used them.

However, whereas funding and technology in 50's Europe was readily available for experimental music, the BBC resisted and would not back it.

Between 1953 and 1956 the BBC acquired its first tape machines, the Ferographs. Oram was barred from using them, but proceeded anyway.

Oram's first experiment was to record test oscillator sounds onto the tapes and vary feedback between them using a mixing desk.

Effectively, this was her first attempt to make 'electronic' music, whereas previously she had manipulated the playback of acoustic sources.

So between 1950 and 56, Oram moved from the mic and playback techniques of Schaeffer in Paris, towards the Cologne style synthetic sound.

By 1956, the BBC were under pressure to catch up with the electronic capbilities European studios. This was in part due to the huge demands of dramatic departments for incidental music, and the considerable costs of employing musicians.

A letter, signed by Oram amongst others, was submitted to the BBC specifying the need for a new facility for electronic music.

Amongst the equipment it requests, 6 special design tape recorders with variable intensity erase heads, facilities for playing tape loops also audio frequency oscillators, filters, and finally, from Oram, tone generators capable of reproducing printed waveforms.

This is 1956, and the idea of scanning a printed or drawn waveform is already in her head, at least 25 years before microprocessors.

A committee was created to manage the kit, which would in 1958 become the BBC Radiophonics Workshop.

After having worked for 8 years towards setting up the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, it's ironic that Oram only lasted a single year there.

The department was set up in 1958 with Desmond Briscoe. They used the word 'Workshop' because it was popular with theatre groups at the time

Whereas Stockhausen eventually won a victory for the primacy of music in the Cologne studio, the BBC workshop focused on drama.

The most famous example of the Radiophonic Workshop's output if of course the Dr. Who theme tune.

In 1958-59 while Oram was there though, the only known synthesizer was the RCA Electronic Music Synthesizer mk2, which was living room size.

Frustrated by the emphasis on drama, Oram left in '59 to concentrate on building the Oramics machine.

She wanted to create a way of controlling synthesizers through direct, freehand muscular expression, based the physicality of a painter.

The oramics machine takes two types of input, what she termed 'digital' and 'analogue'.

Digital, though, in 1959 meant 'responding to data consisting only of a series of off / on commands, 'analogue' meant a continuous signal.

The 'digital' input of the machine she called a 'fretboard', a series of punched holes in a paper that dictated pitch and duration of note.

Using tape to multitrack the recordings of the Oramics machine, she created compositions like this one

The machine is a kind of Oscilloscope in reverse, taking the drawn waveforms and envelopes and realising them in sound.

She achieved all this entirely with analogue electronics (in the modern sense, ie without microprocessors).

'An Individual Note In Sound, Music and Electronics' was the book that Oram wrote, published in 1972. It's about her vision of what makes up an individual, how an individual is shaped by music, and how that affects the way we make music.

The basic idea is that composers and producers function like capacitors, which store energy and release it over a period of time and in reverse that we build up ideas by retracing the musical output of others and recycling that in our own unique way.

Nightwave - The Feel EP

It doesn't seem like two minutes since the last Svetlana Industries release by Bnjmn and they are already following up hot on the heels with EP number 5 (vinyl release number 4) by Nightwave aka Maya Medvesek pka the 8 Bitch.

The five track ep is a mixture of a couple of tracks that have been previewed in demo forms for about a year and tracks that were sent in the morning of going to mastering!

Title track Feel (see video below) sets the tone with a UK bass take on techno, building from subtle beats, whistles and breathless vocals to a full on warped head nodder. You Are My High and Bit Pony may be familiar to Nightwave obsessive geeks like myself who can now tick off a couple more from that very long list of demos we (ok I) want to see on wax, but they fit in with the IDM and techno sound of the ep as a whole. Whilst the original version isn't exactly restrained, the remix of Night Bird from Unknown To The Unknown is pure banging classic Chi town juke / vintage Dance Mania and is seriously worth the admission price alone.

Some great beats and glitchy stuff again but personally I can't get enough of out and out hip hop track, Tree'kle, featuring a very clever use of Roots Manuva's Join The Dots. As this is one of my all time favourites, this could have got very wrong for me but I'm really glad to say Brotto's beats flow naturally next to Rodney's rhymes as if they could have been there all along.

This afternoon Semtek took us to school with a history of rave / d'n'b legend Ray Keith.

Gonna kick off my little Ray Keith history shortly with chapter 1.

Colchester born, Ray Keith started DJing at the ripe age of 12. At that time it was Soul and
Rare Groove that spun on the Essex circuit.

Party-goers were demanding artists like Lonnie Liston Smith and Keith Sweat

...and the productions of Jody Sims, like this Switch masterpiece - Am I Still Your Boyfriend

Simultaneously, so this is the mid-80's, OMD, Depeche Mode and Duran Duran being requested. Like this from 1985

The sound of soul, rare groove and boogie, and the gothic / industrial sound to me are both equally important to Ray Keith's sound.

By the late 80's Keith was working at City Sounds in Farringdon, round the corner from what would become Turnmills.

By the late 80's the electronic sounds of the US were being adopted by UK DJs and artists, not least Mel & Kim

Even Stock Aitken and Waterman played a role in the development of young Ray, especially this number from 1987 Roadblock

Of course, in 1989 one 12" would change everything for DJs both in the US and the UK.

By 1990 Ray Keith was an important player on the hardcore / breakbeat circuit, and a regular DJ at Raindance.

The parties would happen in the further reaches of London, places like Jenkins Lane:

1990 was the golden age of Acid House. Influenced by this Keith took on his first remix. Orbital's Chime:

By 1991 Keith had already abandoned the house sound for the hcore breakbeat groove. This samples Manix ' Feel Real Good'

By 92 you hear already some of the trademark RK sounds in this. Blame sampled the same Seal track for 'Music Takes You.'

Keith's first major success came when he teamed up with Nookie, who would go on to engineer many of his tracks, in 1993

What became his best known track, under the Renegade alias, which hit shelves in 1994. Terrorist

Terrorist was made by Keith and engineered by Nookie in 4 hours. It is still one of the best known tracks of the past 20 years.

Keith talks openly in interviews about how he came to Reggae and Dub later than many people think, around thi1993 / 1994.

In 1995 he started experimenting with the Ragga samples, to devastating effect, with this on Bryan G's Chronic imprint

And it was also in 1995 that he established the imprint that would go on to provide a home for the majority of his releases, Dread.

The first release on Dread, Yes Yes, sold out within days.

1995 was also the year Keith first started using Lemon D as an engineer, on this Pink Floyd sampling bomb.

Sing Time was recorded as Terrorist, an alias he adopted for much of the work with Lemon D.

Like 95, 96 saw nothing but hits from Keith. This appeared as London's Most Wanted on Chronic, sampling House Of Pain.

And then another outing as Renegade on Dread, which produced Dark Soldier, another anthem, bassline!

1996 was the year of the Tech Step sound, and, noting this, Keith inaugurated Penny Black with this from Twisted Anger:

Most of all though, 1996 was the year of Chopper. Of course Shy FX's remix was the hit. But the orig is 1 for the heads

1998 onwards. This was the year Keith elected to record on Dread under his own name for the first time:

Blackmarket records, where he worked at the time, was the hub of the drum'n'bass scene and it formed the ideal outlet for Dread and Penny B.

1998 was also the year he made his V Recordings debut with this banger. 'Do It'

In a similarly hard style he also remixed Mask (Roni Size) and Swabe (Die) on Dope Dragon

For me the final chapter in the story is really 2000 when he started UFO recordings to release "Something Out There".

The vocal was recorded when by chance he heard Leah singing in a neighbouring Brick Lane studio (one in the Truman Brewery to be precise).

I remember seeing him play in Bedford to a crowd of no more than 10 people in 2000, but he still put on a show.

Listening through the way his productions and DJing changed over the years you realise he was always in it to please the crowd.

Never can you accuse him of a shoegazing moment, always a professional, always giving 100% to support the scene and the ravers.

This morning saw the release of our third ep from teaandcakerecords. This time it's some dark, brooding, deep, atmospheric dubstep from man of mystery Bandshell.

I say mystery because it is very hard to pin down and true facts about him. I have known him for about 18 months now and still don't know that much about him. I knew him by at least three different aliases before only recently finding out his real name. I know the area he lives which made me have doubts if I knew his race. I had a feeling I knew his age approximately although initially I thought he was older than he actually is.

However none of that seemed important to me. To me he was Bandshell, the guy with great beats, an encyclopedic knowledge of not only dubstep, grime, garage and techno but also obscure rock bands, always guaranteed to pull out a little gem you've never heard before or drop some new demo he's been working on just that day and sounds better than the majority of things you've heard that year. It's Bandshell and it's an honour to finally be able to share with a wider audience just a first small sample of some of his music.

It's always a pleasure to hear new material from one of my favourite labels, Svetlana Industries and with the forthcoming release by BNJMN.

Keeping with the more techno influenced sound as heard on the other BNJMN releases earlier this year on Rush Hour, Blocks and Plastic World, and like them features well produced futuristic techno that never suffers from sounding dated or like much else around.

The EP is not at all similar sounding Detroit stuff though as Ben's diversity and talents in a range of genres are shown off once again. Having done beats as Jackhigh, guitar based stuff as Singing Statues and techno with these and other BNJMN tracks, he then adds 2 step garage to the cv with 'In Out' and the Burial-esque 'One Sea' which I know for a fact pre dates many other artists who have taken this sound as inspiration by a good two years. He is definitely not a follower of any fashion.

Brand new remixes come courtesy of Lukid, whose video is featured below and is so good I hear it's getting a public screening as a work of art, and Kelpe who goes all deep, dark and aggressive.
